RESUMEN

Background and objective: At present, the etiology of narcolepsy is not fully understood, and it is generally believed to be an autoimmune reaction caused by interactions between environmental and genetic factors. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II genes are strongly associated with this gene, especially HLA-DQB1*0602/DQA1*0102. In this study, we mainly analyzed the correlation between different genotypes of HLA-DQB1*0602/DQA1*0102 and clinical manifestations in Chinese patients with narcolepsy. Experimental method: Narcolepsy patients who were treated at the Department of Neurology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University from January 2021 to September 2023 were selected. General information, sleep monitoring data, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) orexin levels, and human leukocyte antigen gene typing data were collected. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0, and the graphs were drawn using GraphPad Prism 9.5. Main results: A total of 78 patients were included in this study. The DQA1 and DQB1 gene loci were detected in 54 patients, and only the DQB1 gene locus was detected in 24 narcoleptic patients. The most common allele at the HLA-DQB1 locus was *0602 (89.7%), and the most common genotype at this locus was *0602*0301 (19.2%), followed by *0602*0602 (17.9%). The most common phenotype of the HLA-DQA1 locus is *0102 (92.6%), and the most common genotype of this locus is *0102*0102 (27.8%), followed by *0102*0505 (14.8%). There were significant differences (p < 0.05) between HLA-DQB1*0602-positive and HLA-DQB1*0602-negative patients in terms of orexin-A levels, presence or absence of cataplexy, UNS, PSG sleep latency, REM sleep latency, N1 sleep percentage, oxygen depletion index, and average REM latency on the MSLT. The HLA-DQA1*0102-positive and HLA-DQA1*0102-negative patients showed significant differences (p < 0.05) in disease course, presence or absence of sudden onset, PSG REM sleep latency, N1 sleep percentage, and average REM latency on the MSLT. There were significant differences in the average REM latency of the MSLT between HLA-DQB1*0602/DQA1*0102 homozygous and heterozygous patients p < 0.05, and no differences were found in the baseline data, orexin-A levels, scale scores, or other sleep parameters. Conclusion: Different genotypes of HLA-DQA1*0102/DQB1*0602 are associated with symptoms of cataplexy in Chinese narcoleptic patients. Homozygous individuals have a shorter mean REM latency in the MSLT, greater genetic susceptibility, and relatively more severe sleepiness.

RESUMEN

Dopamine,a neurotransmitter ubiquitous in the body fluids, blood, and urine of mammals and humans,is responsible for regulating their functions and metabolism. The dopamine system is involved in the neurobiological mechanisms of narcolepsy in animals and humans. However, researchers have drawn different or even opposite conclusions when measuring the dopamine level in the cerebrospinal fluid of narcolepsy patients.Studies have confirmed that the occurrence of narcolepsy is related to the irreversible loss of orexins. The autoimmune reaction caused by the interactions of environmental factors with genetic factors destroys the hypothalamic orexin neurons and reduces orexin secretion, thereby lowering the level of arousal. We introduce the research progress and current status of dopamine and clinical characterization of narcolepsy by reviewing more than 40 articles published from 1982 to 2023,aiming to provide a reference for studying the relationship between the dopamine level and clinical characterization of narcolepsy and searching for the biomarkers of type 2 narcolepsy.

RESUMEN

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) are promising next-generation energy storage devices, yet suffer from the issues of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and intricate side reactions on the Zn anode surface. The hydrogen (H)-bond networks play a critical role in interfacial proton transport that may closely relate to HER but are rarely investigated.Herein, we report a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) strategy which is constructed by anchoring ionic liquid cations on Ti3C2Tx substrate for HER-free Zn anode. Molecule dynamics simulations reveal that the rationally designed SAM with a high coordination number of water molecules (25~27, 4~6 for Zn2+) largely reduces the interfacial densities of H2O molecules, therefore breaking the connectivity of H-bond networks and blocking proton transport on the interface, by which the HER is suppressed. Then, a series of in-situ characterizations demonstrate that negligible amounts of H2 gas are collected from the Zn@SAM-MXene anode. Consequently, the symmetric cell enables a long-cycling life of 3000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1000 h at 5 mA cm-2. More significantly, the stable Zn@SAM-MXene films are successfully used for coin full cells showing high-capacity retention of over 94% after 1000 cycles and large-area (10 × 5 cm2) pouch cells with desired performance.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a common form of congenital heart disease. Although several genes related to ASD have been found, the genetic factors of ASD remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between 10 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and sporadic atrial septal defects. METHODS: Based on the results of 34 individual whole exome sequences, 10 candidate SNPs were selected. In total, 489 ASD samples and 420 normal samples were collected. The 10 SNPs in the case group and the control group were identified through Snapshot genotyping technology. The χ2-test and unconditional regression model were used to evaluate the relationship between ASD and each candidate SNP. Haploview software was used to perform linkage disequilibrium and haplotype analysis. RESULTS: The χ2 results showed that the FLT4 rs383985 (P = 0.003, OR = 1.115-1.773), HYDIN rs7198975 (P = 0.04621, OR = 1.003-1.461), and HYDIN rs1774266 (P = 0.04621, OR = 1.003-1.461) alleles were significantly different between the control group and the case group (P < 0.05). Only the association with the FLT4 polymorphism was statistically significant after adjustment for multiple comparisons. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that a possible molecular pathogenesis associated with sporadic ASD is worth exploring in future studies.

RESUMEN

Changeable substituent groups of organic molecules can provide an opportunity to clarify the antibacterial mechanism of organic molecules by tuning the electron cloud density of their skeleton. However, understanding the antibacterial mechanism of organic molecules is challenging. Herein, we reported a molecular view strategy for clarifying the antibacterial switch mechanism by tuning electron cloud density of cinnamaldehyde molecule skeleton. The cinnamaldehyde and its derivatives were self-assembled into nanosheets with excellent water solubility, respectively. The experimental results show that α-bromocinnamaldehyde (BCA) nanosheets exhibits unprecedented antibacterial activity, but there is no antibacterial activity for α-methylcinnamaldehyde nanosheets. Therefore, the BCA nanosheets and α-methylcinnamaldehyde nanosheets achieve an antibacterial switch. Theoretical calculations further confirmed that the electron-withdrawing substituent of the bromine atom leads to a lower electron cloud density of the aldehyde group than that of the electron-donor substituent of the methyl group at the α-position of the cinnamaldehyde skeleton, which is a key point in elucidating the antimicrobial switch mechanism. The excellent biocompatibility of BCA nanosheets was confirmed by CCK-8. The mouse wound infection model, H&E staining, and the crawling ability of drosophila larvae show that as-prepared BCA nanosheets are safe and promising for wound healing. This study provides a new strategy for the synthesis of low-cost organic nanomaterials with good biocompatibility. It is expected to expand the application of natural organic small molecule materials in antimicrobial agents.

RESUMEN

A "signal-on" electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor has been proposed for detecting carbohydrate antigen 153 (CA153) based on the dual MOFs sandwich strategy. The conductive and porous substrate consisting of 1T-MoS2 and two-dimensional conductive metal-organic framework (MOF, Ni-HAB) was anchored onto the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to label the capture antibody (Ab1), and the luminescence-functionalized MOF (Ru(bpy)32+@UiO-66-NH2) was utilized to immobilize the detection second antibody (Ab2) to construct a "signal-on" responsive sandwich-type electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Meanwhile, tripropylamine (TPA) acts as the co-reactant and provides a luminescence system for Ru(bpy)32+@UiO-66-NH2. The luminescence-functionalized MOFs showed excellent ECL activity owing to the tunable structure of MOFs. The remarkable enhancement in ECL intensity was obtained by the immunoreaction of antigen and antibody. Under the optimized conditions, the biosensor exhibited a detection limit of 0.0001 U mL-1 (S/N = 3) with a wide range from 0.001 to 50 U mL-1. The proposed ECL immunosensor was applicable for detecting human serum samples with a recovery of 99.83 ∼ 101 % (RSD < 5 %). This work demonstrates that the advantage of multifunctional MOFs could be applied to construct highly selective ECL immunosensor, and it may facilitate the diagnosis of breast cancer in clinics.

RESUMEN

With the pursuit of high energy and power density, the fast-charging capability of lithium-metal batteries has progressively been the primary focus of attention. To prevent the formation of lithium dendrites during fast charging, the ideal solid electrolyte interphase should be capable of concurrent fast Li+ transport and uniform nucleation sites; however, its construction in a facile manner remains a challenge. Here, as Al3+ has a higher charge and Al metal is lithiophilic, we tuned the Li+ solvation structure by introducing LiNO3 and aluminum ethoxide together, resulting in the dissolution of LiNO3 and the simultaneous generation of fast ionic conductor and lithiophilic sites. Consequently, our approach facilitated the deposition of lithium metal in a uniform and chunky way, even at a high current density. As a result, the Coulombic efficiency of the Li||Cu cell increased to over 99%. Moreover, the Li||LiFePO4 full cell demonstrated significantly enhanced cycling performance with a remarkable capacity retention of 94.5% at 4 C, far superior to the 46.1% capacity retention observed with the base electrolyte.

RESUMEN

To identify the key factors influencing the trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) content of teleost fishes living in shallow seas and the epipelagic zone of the deep ocean, the muscle TMAO content was measured in 152 teleost fishes (21 species) collected from the marginal seas of China and the epipelagic zone of the northwest Pacific Ocean (NWPO) during May-July 2021. The results showed that the TMAO content in all fishes varied from 4.99 to 82.97 mmol kg-1, and it varied notably among different species, e.g., the highest average content (72.71 ± 8.22 mmol kg-1 in Argyrosomus argentatus) was 1 order of magnitude higher than the lowest one (Scomber japonicus), but the ratios of the highest content to the lowest content in each species varied from 1.29 to 3.28, suggesting that the interspecific variations in TMAO content were obviously greater than the intraspecific variations. Moreover, no correlation was observed between the TMAO content of the 152 fishes and the corresponding environmental factors of seawater depth, salinity and temperature, indicating that species played a more important role than environmental factors in driving TMAO accumulation. To exclude the influence of species, intraspecies correlations between TMAO content and environmental factors were analyzed. In the marginal seas of China, only ∼8 % of the TMAO content of teleost fishes (1 species) showed a positive correlation with salinity and depth, but ∼50 % of the TMAO content (5 species) was negatively correlated with temperature. Moreover, the TMAO content of the fish increased by 4.66 ± 1.38 % compared with their corresponding intraspecific average values for every 1 °C of temperature decrease. A similar phenomenon was also found in the TMAO content of pelagic teleost fishes in the NWPO, suggesting that temperature was a key environmental factor affecting the TMAO content of teleost fishes in shallow seas and the epipelagic zone of the deep ocean.

RESUMEN

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) are seriously plagued by the direct exposure of the Mg anode to the electrolyte components, leading to spontaneous and electrochemical side reactions and interfacial passivation. Herein, a benign coordination layer is constructed at the Mg/electrolyte interface where aniline with a strong magnesiophilic amine group and high stability to Mg is chosen as representative, which has higher adsorption energy than DME (1,2-dimethoxyethane) and trace water. This Mg coordination environment mitigates side reactions, forming a non-passivating interface consisting of aniline and much fewer by-products after several cycles. Therefore, the Mg symmetrical cell operates with a low overpotential and uniform Mg0 deposition. This interfacial coordination can also be adopted for Mg anode protection in various electrolyte cases of Mg(TFSI)2 electrolyte systems.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To study myocardial deformation in fetuses with ventricular afterload increase compared with gestational age-matched controls using speckle tracking echocardiography. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighty-nine fetuses were retrospectively selected from the pregnancy screen by echocardiography. There are 41 fetuses with gestational age-matched normal heart served as the control group, 25 fetuses with congenital heart disease (CHD) leading to left ventricular (LV) afterload increase as group LVA and 23 fetuses with CHD leading to right ventricular(RV) afterload increases as group RVA. LV and RV fractional shortening (FS) were measured by conventional methods. The longitudinal strain (LS) and strain rate (LSr) were analyzed by EchoPac software. Group LVA and RVA compared with control group, the LV FS was no significant difference, but LS and LSr values of LV were lower in fetuses with LVA compared to the control group (LS:-15.97(-12.50,-22.52)vs -27.53(-24.33,-29.16) %, p < .01; systolic strain rate (SRs):-1.34(-1.12,-2.16) vs -2.55(-2.28,-2.92) 1/sec, p < .01; early diastolic strain rate (SRe):1.70 ± 0.57 vs 2.46 ± 0.61 1/sec, p < 0.01; late diastolic strain rate (SRa):1.62 ± 0.82 vs 2.39 ± 0.81 1/sec, p < .01). LS and LSr values of LV or RV were lower in fetuses with RVA compared to the control group (LV: LS:-21.52 ± 6.68 vs -26.79 ± 3.22%, p < .01; SRs:-2.11 ± 0.78 vs -2.56 ± 0.43 1/sec; p = .02; RV: LS:-17.64 ± 7.58 vs -26.38 ± 3.97%, p < .01; SRs:-1.62 ± 0.67 vs -2.37 ± 0.44 1/sec; p < .01). CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that the ventricular LS, LSr, SRs, SRe, SRa values were lower in fetuses with LV or RV afterload increasing CHD estimated by speckle tracking imaging but LV and RV FS were normal, which indicated the strain imaging is feasible in evaluating cardiac function of fetus, and may be more sensitive.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Motoric cognitive risk (MCR) syndrome is a type of pre-dementia. It is defined as the co-occurrence of subjective cognitive complaints and a slow gait speed. A recent study found that handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry is associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative disorders. We aimed to investigate the associations of HGS weakness and asymmetry separately and together with MCR incidence among older Chinese adults. METHODS: Data from the 2011 and 2015 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were used. HGS values <28 kg for male participants and <18 kg for female participants were considered HGS weaknesses. HGS asymmetry was assessed by the ratio of nondominant to dominant HGS. We used 3 different cutoff values of HGS ratio to define asymmetry, including 10%, 20%, and 30%. Specifically, HGS ratios <0.90 or >1.10 (10%), <0.80 or >1.20 (20%), and <0.70 or >1.30 (30%) were classified as asymmetry. The participants were classified into 4 groups: neither weakness nor asymmetry (neither), asymmetry only, weakness only, and weakness and asymmetry (both). The association between baseline HGS status and 4-year incidence of MCR was examined using logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: A total of 3,777 participants 60 years and older were included in the baseline analysis. The prevalence of MCR at the baseline was 12.8%. Participants with asymmetry only, weakness only, and both showed significantly increased risk of MCR. After excluding participants with MCR at baseline, 2,328 participants were included in the longitudinal analysis. There were 111 MCR cases (4.77%) over the 4-year follow-up period. Participants with HGS weakness and asymmetry together at baseline had increased odds of incident MCR (HGS ratio at 10%: odds ratio [OR] 4.48, p < 0.001; HGS ratio at 20%: OR 5.43, p < 0.001; HGS ratio at 30%: OR 6.02, p < 0.001). DISCUSSION: These results show that the presence of both HGS asymmetry and weakness is associated with MCR incidence. The early recognition of HGS asymmetry and weakness may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of cognitive dysfunction.

RESUMEN

Heterogeneous ice nucleation is ubiquitous but its microscopic mechanisms can be extraordinarily complex even on a simple surface. Such complexity poses a challenge in modeling nucleation using advanced sampling methods. Here, we investigate heterogeneous ice nucleation on an FCC (211) surface by a forward flux sampling (FFS) method to understand how the complexity in nucleation pathways affects the accuracy of FFS. We first show the commonly adopted, size-based order parameter fails to describe heterogeneous ice nucleation on the FCC (211) surface. Inclusion of geometric anisotropy of ice nucleus as an additional descriptor is found to significantly improve the quality of the size-based order parameter for the current system. Subsequent application of this new order parameter in FFS identifies two competing ice nucleation pathways in the system: a primary-prism-planed (PPP) path and a secondary-prism-planed (SPP) path, both leading to the formation of hexagonal ice but with different crystalline orientations. Although the PPP pathway dominates ice nucleation on the FCC (211) surface, the occurrence of the less efficient SPP pathway, particularly its strong presence at the early stage of FFS, is found to yield a significant statistical uncertainty in the calculated FFS rate constant. We develop a two-path model that enables gaining a general, quantitative understanding of the impact of initial finite sampling on the reliability of FFS calculations in the presence of multiple nucleation pathways. Our study also suggests a few general strategies for improving the accuracy of FFS when exploring unknown but complex systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Lung function decline is associated with sarcopenia, known as loss of skeletal muscle mass. The serum creatinine to cystatin C ratio (CCR) has been proposed as a biomarker of muscle mass. The associations between CCR and lung function decline are unknown. METHODS: The study used two waves of data from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 and 2015. Serum creatinine and cystatin C were collected at baseline survey (2011). Lung function was assessed by peak expiratory flow (PEF) at 2011 and 2015. Linear regression models adjusted for potential confounders were conducted to analyze the cross-sectional association between CCR and PEF, and the longitudinal association between CCR and annual decline in PEF. RESULTS: Totally, 5812 participants aged over 50 years (50.8% women; mean age 63.3 ± 6.5 years) were enrolled in a cross-sectional analysis in 2011, and further 4164 individuals were followed up in 2015. Serum CCR was positively associated with PEF and the PEF% pred. Per 1 SD higher of CCR was associated with 41.55 L/min increases in PEF (p < 0.001) and 10.77 (%) increase in PEF% pred (p < 0.001). Longitudinal analyses indicated that higher CCR level at baseline was related to slower annual decline in PEF and PEF% pred. And this relationship was significant only in women and in never smokers. CONCLUSIONS: Higher CCR was associated with slower longitudinal PEF decline in women and never smokers. CCR may be a valuable marker to monitor and predict lung function decline in middle-aged and older adults.

RESUMEN

Objectives: Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are closely associated with metabolic syndrome and its components. Hence, a combination of these two obesity markers may be more predictive. In this study, we aimed to investigate the individual and combined associations of BMI and WC with selected components of metabolic syndrome and explored whether age, sex and ethnicity affected the aforementioned associations. Methods: A total of 6,298 middle-aged and older adults were included. Based on BMI and WC, the participants were divided into 4 groups: comorbid obesity (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 and WC< 85/90 cm for women/men), abdominal obesity alone (BMI< 28 kg/m2 and WC≥ 85/90 cm for women/men), general obesity alone (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 and WC< 85/90 cm for women/men) and nonobesity subgroups (BMI< 28 kg/m2 and WC< 85/90 cm for women/men). Selected components of metabolic syndrome were evaluated using the criteria recommended by the Chinese Diabetes Society. Poisson regression models with robust variance were used to evaluate the associations of obesity groups with selected components of metabolic syndrome. An interaction test was conducted to explore whether age, sex and ethnicity affect the aforementioned associations. Results: Compared with participants in the reference group (comorbid obesity), participants in the other 3 groups showed a decreased prevalence of fasting hyperglycemia (PR=0.83, 95% CI=0.73-0.94 for abdominal obesity alone, PR=0.60, 95% CI=0.38-0.96 for general obesity alone and PR=0.46, 95% CI=0.40-0.53 for nonobesity), hypertension (PR=0.86, 95% CI=0.82-0.90 for abdominal obesity alone, PR=0.80, 95% CI=0.65-0.97 for general obesity alone and PR=0.69, 95% CI = 0.66-0.73 for nonobesity) and hypertriglyceridemia (PR=0.88, 95% CI=0.82-0.95 for abdominal obesity alone, PR=0.62, 95% CI=0.47-0.81 for general obesity alone and PR=0.53, 95% CI=0.49-0.57 for nonobesity). However, participants in the abdominal obesity alone and nonobesity groups showed a decreased prevalence of low HDL-C levels while participants in the general obesity alone group did not (PR=0.65, 95% CI=0.41-1.03, p>0.05). In addition, the aforementioned associations were not affected by age, sex or ethnicity (all p for interactions>0.05). Conclusions: Comorbid obesity is superior to general and abdominal obesity in identifying individuals at high risk of developing metabolic syndrome in middle-aged and older adults. Great importance should be attached to the combined effect of BMI and WC on the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The trajectory of frailty and intrinsic capacity (IC) often overlap in older adults. Longitudinal analyses of transitions of frailty and IC, and their associations with incident functional decline are limited. The present study aimed to identify transitions of frailty status and IC, and explore associations between transitions of frailty and IC, and future disability among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: In the West China and Aging Trend Study, 808 participants aged ≥ 60 years completed baseline and three years follow-up (frailty, IC and disability assessments). Physical frailty was measured based on Fried phenotype. IC was evaluated by five domains (cognition, locomotion, sensory, psychological, and vitality). Disability was defined as a need for assistance in any items in activity of daily living (ADL) or the instrumental activity of daily living (IADL). Logistic regressions were performed to examine their relationships. RESULTS: Four transitions of IC status (kept well: 27.4%, improved: 8.4%, worsened: 35.4%, and kept poor: 28.8%), and two transitions of frailty status (kept not-frail/improved: 93.2%, kept frail/worsened: 6.8%) were identified. Impaired locomotion and vitality at baseline were significantly associated with kept frail or worsened frail. However, impaired sensory and vitality at baseline not frailty status was significantly associated with transitions of IC. Adjusted for covariates and transitions of frailty, kept poor IC was associated with ADL (OR = 2.26, 95%CI = 1.17,4.34) and IADL disability (OR = 3.74, 95%CI = 1.79, 7.82). CONCLUSIONS: Transitions of IC, but not frailty were associated with higher risk of incident disability. Baseline locomotion and vitality impairment were associated with worsened or kept frail. Our findings support the WHO's notion of monitoring and optimizing IC to delay deterioration of IC and preventing frailty and disability. CLINICAL TRIAL NUMBER: ChiCTR1800018895.

RESUMEN

Aqueous zinc-ion battery (ZIB) featuring with high safety, low cost, environmentally friendly, and high energy density is one of the most promising systems for large-scale energy storage application. Despite extensive research progress made in developing high-performance cathodes, the Zn anode issues, such as Zn dendrites, corrosion, and hydrogen evolution, have been observed to shorten ZIB's lifespan seriously, thus restricting their practical application. Engineering advanced Zn anodes based on two-dimensional (2D) materials are widely investigated to address these issues. With atomic thickness, 2D materials possess ultrahigh specific surface area, much exposed active sites, superior mechanical strength and flexibility, and unique electrical properties, which confirm to be a promising alternative anode material for ZIBs. This review aims to boost rational design strategies of 2D materials for practical application of ZIB by combining the fundamental principle and research progress. Firstly, the fundamental principles of 2D materials against the drawbacks of Zn anode are introduced. Then, the designed strategies of several typical 2D materials for stable Zn anodes are comprehensively summarized. Finally, perspectives on the future development of advanced Zn anodes by taking advantage of these unique properties of 2D materials are proposed.

RESUMEN

The demand for high-energy-density and safe energy storage devices has spurred increasing interest in high-voltage rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMB). As electrolytes are the bridge connecting the cathode and anode materials, the development of high-voltage electrolytes is the key factor in realizing high-voltage RMBs. This concept presents an overview of three chloride-free electrolyte systems with wide electrochemical windows, together with the degradation mechanisms and modification strategies at the anode/electrolyte interphase. Finally, future directions in stabilizing Mg anodes and realizing high-voltage RMBs are highlighted.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The relationship between vitamin D and sarcopenia was inconsistent between men and women. Physical activity (PA) may interact with vitamin D on sarcopenia. However, the sex-specific relationships of vitamin D, PA and sarcopenia have yet elucidated. We aimed to examine the sex differences in the relation between vitamin D status, PA levels, obesity and sarcopenia in community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults, as well as whether vitamin D status is a modifier in the relationship between PA and sarcopenia. METHODS: The current study was a cross-sectional study based on the baseline survey of the West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study. A total of 3713 participants aged ≥ 50y were included in our study. Sarcopenia was defined according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 consensus. Obesity was defined by body mass index (BMI) (≥ 28 kg/m2) and body fat mass percentage (≥ 60th percentile in each sex group). 25-hydroxyvitamin D was measured by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay and PA was evaluated by a validated China Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (CLTPAQ). Multinomial logistic regression was performed to examine the relationship between PA, vitamin D and sarcopenia and obesity. RESULTS: Low PA was significantly associated with higher odds of sarcopenia in women only (OR = 1.70,95%CI:1.18,2.46, p < 0.01). Vitamin D deficiency was only associated with sarcopenia in men (OR = 1.85,95%CI: 1.27,2.69, p < 0.01). Low PA was significantly associated with obesity, sarcopenia, and sarcopenic obesity only in participants with serum 25(OH)D < 20 ng/ml. CONCLUSIONS: The role of vitamin D and PA in obesity and sarcopenia was different between men and women, and the relationship between PA and sarcopenia was modified by serum vitamin D status. These findings highlighted the need to supplement vitamin D in individuals with physical inactivity and provide different interventions strategies to sarcopenia in men and women. RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenic obesity is a prevalent geriatric syndrome, characterized by concurrence of sarcopenia and obesity. Sleep duration is linked to both obesity and sarcopenia. However, little was known regarding the association of sleep duration with sarcopenic obesity. In this study, we aimed to examine the association of sleep duration with sarcopenic obesity in multi-ethnic community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Sarcopenia was defined according to the criteria established by Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019. Obesity was defined as body fat percentage above the 60th percentile specified by sex. Sarcopenic obesity was defined as concurrence of obesity and sarcopenia. Sleep duration was collected by a self-reported questionnaire and was further divided into 5 groups: "<6 h", "6-7 h", "7-8 h", "8-9 h" (reference group) and "≥9 h" (long sleep). Logistic regressions were adopted to examine the association. RESULTS: 2256 multi-ethnic adults aged 60 and over from the West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study were involved for present study. Overall, 6.25% of the participants were classified as sarcopenic obesity. In the fully adjusted model, long sleep duration (≥ 9 h) was significantly associated with sarcopenic obesity compared with reference group (OR = 1.81, 95%CI = 1.10-2.98, P = 0.019). However, in subgroup analysis, this association can only be observed in male (OR 1.98, 95% CI = 1.02-3.87, P = 0.043) not in female (OR = 1.83, 95%CI = 0.85-3.94, P = 0.118). Regarding ethnic difference, Han older adults with long sleep duration (≥ 9 h) presented increased risk of sarcopenic obesity while ethnic minorities did not. CONCLUSION: This study disclosed that long sleep duration significantly increased the risk of sarcopenic obesity among older adults. And our findings highlight the critical role of assessing sleep duration to identify individuals at risk of sarcopenic obesity.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Uncertainties remain regarding the relationship between sarcopenic obesity and frailty. This study aimed to explore the association of these two common geriatric syndromes among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: Baseline data from the West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study was used. Sarcopenia was assessed based on the criteria established by the Asian working group for sarcopenia. Body fat percentages above the 60th percentile specified by sex were classified as obesity. Sarcopenic obesity was defined as the concurrence of obesity and sarcopenia. Frailty was assessed by Fried criteria. Multinomial logistic regression was adopted to explore associations of sarcopenic obesity with frailty. RESULTS: Overall, 2372 older adults (mean age 67.6 ± 5.9) were involved in this study. The prevalence of frailty and sarcopenic obesity was 6.2 and 6.28%, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, sarcopenic obesity was significantly associated with prefrailty (OR = 1.74, 95% CI = 1.15-2.64, P = 0.009) and frailty (OR = 4.42, 95% CI = 2.19-8.93, P < 0.001) compared to nonsarcopenia and nonobesity. CONCLUSIONS: Sarcopenic obesity was significantly correlated with prefrailty and frailty among older adults. Intervention for sarcopenic obesity may contribute to the prevention of incident frailty.
